Surprisingly, Phantom Hourglass is the first Zelda game to hit the DS system and is a direct sequel to the GameCube adventure; The Wind Waker. Retaining the original art style & surrounding world keeps the original feel and look but revamps the mechanics for use on the DS. This results in a game that consists of the pure Zelda gaming, with its mind boggling puzzles, dangerous dungeons and exciting boss battles; Phantom Hourglass is simply the most innovative entry into the Zelda series.
What really makes this game shine is its control scheme. Everything you do in the game involves taps and swipes of the stylus and unique use of the microphone. The result is a game that really gets you thinking and although the game may not be the best looking one out there, what it lacks in graphics it really make up for with its innovation. The use of the duel screen for boss fights gives a whole new feel and space to the way you play your DS and its just simply bundles of fun all packed into a tiny SD card.
The only down side to Phantom Hourglass would be its easy-to-understand storyline that, whilst attracting the casual and younger gamers who might be new to Zelda comes across as thin at times. The controls are probably the smoothest on the DS which makes the game a joy to play through and the whole game can be played entirely through the touch screen. Another upside to game features a two-player battle mode that can be activated via the game's Wi-Fi connection for more added fun.
We wont spoil too much for those of you who haven't had a chance to play it yet but The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is pure Nintendo evolution, innovation and uniqueness. It is definitely a game worth picking up if you own a Nintendo DS.
