Last year saw some great Final Fantasy releases and this year Square Enix isn’t slowing down anytime soon. After Crisis Core’s success, the next great PlayStation Portable Final Fantasy title will be Final Fantasy Dissidia. Basically this game is a Final Fantasy All-Stars fighting game.
The game will feature both protagonists and antagonists from each installment of the main Final Fantasy series. Characters confirmed for the brawl so far are Warrior of Light and Garland from Final Fantasy I, Firion and Emperor Palamecia from Final Fantasy II, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, Squall Leonhart and Ultimecia from Final Fantasy VIII and finally Zidane Tribal and Kuja from Final Fantasy IX. We can only speculate to what characters will be added to the list and its very exciting. Other characters that have recently been revealed are Chaos as the god of darkness; while a new character and Cosmos as the goddess of light. It is unknown if these two will be playable or not though. Good news is that the game won’t be just a simple and mindless fighting game. It will feature a complete storyline that requires playing through all of the characters to complete. Hidden characters are a likely possibility and Characters will be able to gain customizable equipment, and to earn experience and gil. What the gil will be used for is not known at this point in time. The most exciting news for Final Fantasy fans will be that Tetsuya Nomura is responsible for the character designs which will retain the look and style of Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations.
Square actually released a brief trailer that is quite impressive. The first scene opens with a full glory CG shot of a barren and rocky terrain which disbands into a close up of the Warrior of Lights face, the hero of Final Fantasy I. The next character revealed to us through the video is Zidane of Final Fantasy IX. Complete with an enhanced look we see him fighting a rather fierce battle against his arch nemesis, Kuja. When the video reverts back to CG we see a flaming spring of fire gushing out of the ground to reveal Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. The Warrior of light then reappears to see Sephiroth from afar pointing his sword out in front of him and so ends the teaser and a teaser it is. By Final Fantasy fans all over, Sony’s epic answer to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros is highly anticipated. Fans have always debated who would win in a certain fight, Cloud or Squall etc. well know you can find out and the list of characters available hasn’t even been fully revealed yet. How the characters will tie in together within a story is a mystery but this all seems kind of reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts. The battle system is similar although much more dramatic and the characters being thrown into one giant mix together is similar also. This is truly exciting and not only that but what has been revealed so far hasn’t even scratched the surface of the extent of content within the game. Also, the arenas they are fighting it out in are apparently going to be unforgettable Final Fantasy locations, one recognizable one being the Crystal World from IX.
Unfortunatly there has been no word on a release date but be sure we will all hear about a Japanese day soon. If Crisis Core was reason enough to buy a PSP well now you have two reasons to do so. Although there has been no word of any plans to release this game in the U.S.A or on European shores there is a large FF fan base outside of Japan that shouldn’t be neglected. Other rumors going around about this game is how it will incorporate Summoning. Though no screen shots or other word has confirmed this it could totally possible. One concern however is if it will sell well enough. Reason being is that it’s a game that by some view points only appeals to those hardcore Final Fantasy or Square Enix fans.Only time will tell but as soon as we get our hands on a copy be sure to read our Reviews.
One great thing about this title is that there is always something to do. The drama never stops and it’s an exhilarating feeling that captures you from the beginning, especially when old enemies return to the story. It’s this face paced game play that keeps it exciting and makes the game work well. The personality’s of the characters around you are appealing and adds shape to the eventful story.
